Applicant Selection Information

General Information on the Selection of ComSciConCAN National Attendees

  • Science communication and/or outreach (often abbreviated to scicomm) is the practice of sharing science with non-specialist audiences. This includes, but is not limited to: presentations, journalism, podcasts, art, working with schools, event organization, and science policy.

  • Attendees of ComSciConCAN (national conference) are expected to have some previous scicomm experience; however, they are not expected to be experts.

  • As an applicant, it is up to you to best explain your previous experience in scicomm. You can choose to explain one example in detail, or briefly touch on multiple examples. We understand that the short application piece does not allow for enough space to describe all of your scicomm work. This is not a resume/CV or cover letter.

  • As an applicant, you must also state why you want to attend ComSciConCAN.

  • Your short written application piece is an act of scicomm itself! You must decide how to best describe your work and interests while being clear and concise. Attendees are selected based on their demonstrated experience and communication skills, diversity, and budget considerations. Please see our Application Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Statement and Budget Statement below.

Application Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Considerations

ComSciConCAN acknowledges and appreciates the diversity and various lived experiences of our science communication community, and we recognize our responsibility to actively contribute to a more just society. We are committed to ensuring that our cohort of conference attendees reflects the Canadian community. We strongly encourage applications from historically excluded groups, including, but not limited to, Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (Canada), visible minorities, persons with disabilities, and persons from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. While our selection of applicants is based mainly on the merits of the written application piece, we also take EDI considerations into account, as well as geographical location, university affiliation, and field of study.

For further information regarding our commitment to EDI, please refer to our Code of Conduct .

Budget Considerations

ComSciConCAN is a non-profit organization. All conference funding is generously provided by our sponsors. With funding that fluctuates from year to year, the expenses associated with applicant requirements may need to be considered when selecting attendees.
